The Atlanta Public School system is considering a bad idea that would eliminate 15% of their school librarians next year. We need your help today to ask them to reconsider these cuts and keep 100% of their certified school librarians in schools across Atlanta.
Students in Atlanta Public Schools need the instructional support and dedicated time they get from their school librarians in order to succeed - both academically and personally. Atlanta schools are organized into three ‘Clusters’ of schools that have “Signature Programs”. Students in all three Clusters - the International Baccalaureate Program, the STEM Program, and the College and Career Program - need the resources, encouragement, and personalized learning that their school librarians provide. There are at least 14 schools and 14 certified school librarians who are likely on the target list today. Please take a moment and tell the Atlanta Public School Board that cutting 15% of their school librarians is a bad idea for students.

EveryLibrary is proud to stand with the Georgia Library Media Association (GLMA), the statewide organization of school librarians, to oppose these cuts. GLMA members across the state of Georgia know what it means to help kids in College and Career Readiness Programs learn the critical thinking, information literacy, media literacy, and technology literacy skills they need for their future paths. Certified school library media specialists across the state’s STEM/STEAM programs teach reasoning and critical thinking through problem-based, student-centered learning every day. And the International Baccalaureate Program knows that school libraries and librarians are so essential to student success that this prestigious academic program requires them.
Please join with GLMA and EveryLibrary to tell the School Board, Superintendent, and Deputy Superintendents of Atlanta Public Schools that certified library media specialist are essential in each and every school. When it comes to focusing on student success in Atlanta, our children deserve nothing less. GLMA President Jennifer Helfrich puts it best when she says “Eliminating certified library media specialists sends the message that the school places a stronger emphasis on materials management rather than the development of its students.” Thank you for standing up today for the students and their librarians across Atlanta.
